SEG Student Chapter
The “ETH Zurich – SEG Student Chapter” is a student organisation that promotes the study of mineral deposits and of geological processes related to their formation through a range of activities and events. Students of all academic levels, from Bachelor's to doctoral students, senior researchers, and alumni, meet to share, discuss, and expand their ideas and knowledge in the broad field of economic geology.
The student chapter is affiliated to the external page Society of Economic Geologists (SEG), and is supported by Prof. Cyril Chelle-Michou, Professor of Mineral Resource Systems at ETH Zurich, as its academic advisor; and Dr. Michael Steinmann, President and Chief Executive Officer of Pan American Silver, as its industry advisor. This combination of academic and industry perspectives is at the core of the activities of the chapter and allows the students to bridge their theoretical knowledge with more applied approaches of mineral resources such as exploration, extraction, processing and environmental management.
Student meetings, talks by invited or local speakers and field trips are some of the activities organised by the students. It gives all participants the opportunity to study a broad range of ore deposit types and become familiar with their exploration and mining techniques. South Africa, Italy, South America, Spain, Russia, Bulgaria, Germany, Turkey, Romania, Canada, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, and Poland have been the focus of these field trips since the chapter was founded in 2003.
If you are interested in any aspect of economic geology and would like to be part of a network of collaboration and discussion in both academic and professional development, join the “ETH Zurich – SEG Student Chapter”, they are what you are looking for!
