Research area
Mineral resources, geochemistry of hydrothermal processes, LA-ICPMS microanalysis
Christoph Heinrich was born September 8, 1953 in Thalwil (Switzerland) and studied geology and petrology at ETH Zurich through to his PhD on Alpine high pressure metamorphism. During two years of post-doctoral research at the CSIRO in Sydney (Australia) he moved into ore deposit geology, and then held a research position as economic geologist and hydrothermal geochemist at the Australian Geological Survey Organisation (now Geoscience Australia), with Visiting Fellowships at the Australian National University in Canberra and the DSIR in Wellington, New Zealand. He was appointed Professor of Mineral Resouces at ETH Zurich and at the University of Zurich in 1994 and held these positions until his formal retirement in 2019. From 2004 to 2009 he led the rebuilding of the focusTerra information and outreach centre.
His research interests continue to focus on geological processes leading to the formation of metallic mineral resources in the earth's interior and the application of research results in mineral exploration, in collaboration with colleagues and students at ETH Zurich. He also maintains an engagement with public outreach in the context of responsible use of mineral resources.
